45 engines in three banks

MD has 21, measured from the Machinedrum: 13 TRX and 8 EFM. MODERN has 10, among them ACID, a 303-style bass. CLASSIC has 14, the 808 and 909 family. 152 factory presets and 128 user slots.

EDIT, then KNOB1 picks the model; on the HOME screen (HOME) four knobs shape it.

Resonators

Any track can ring through a string, pipe, chord or modal bar, tuned in semitones. Grey is the dry hit, bright the ring.

FX, then SELECT to RESON.

A compressor that pumps

The Streams compressor, keyed by the kick (here BDTRX), ducks the rest: ACID's bass line and the hats pump. Amber is the gain reduction. GHOST keeps the pump with the kick muted.

HOME to the HOME screen, SELECT to COMP; a white key ducks a track.

Two LFOs on every track

Ten waves with shape morphing and four routing slots. Each slot selects either LFO in BIP, UNI+ or UNI−. Here they move a hi-hat's MTAL and decay.

LFO: LFO 1 on KNOB1-KNOB2, LFO 2 on KNOB3-KNOB4; DEST is the last page.

Steps that roll dice

A step can play by chance, ratchet, or wait for a fill bar. Mutes can wait for the next bar, and knob moves record into the pattern. Parameter locks give one step its own value for a knob, on any sound page: the next step plays the knob again.

SEQ: hold a step, KNOB1 chance, KNOB2 ratchet. Hold GLO for mutes; REC records knob moves. ENV: the keys are the steps on every page; hold one and turn a knob to lock it, OCT- clears.

Grids

Mutable Instruments' map of drum patterns: move through it and the kick, snare and hat lanes rewrite. Three densities; drum tracks can follow a lane. On GRIDS page 2, K4 assigns T1–T3; stopped, OCT+ writes a 64-step snapshot for Remix.

ARP; SELECT to the fills.

Effects, per track and live

Each track has a filter, resonator, distortion and slicer, then delay, reverb and chorus. Hold FX and the black keys repeat, reverse, filter, stop or freeze the mix.

FX for the pages; hold FX and play the black keys.

ACID · PWM · polarity

SAW, PULSE and MORPH run through the real engine. Route the LFO in BIP, UNI+ or UNI− and hear the difference.
